Spirulina are blue - green algae that grow in warm, alkaline fresh waters around the world. It is made up of 65% to 71% protein compare to beef’s 22%. The algae is a rich source of all eight essential amino acids, enzymes, gamma linolenic acid (an essential fatty acid), natural plant sugars, beta-carotene, carotenoids, Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin E, as well as chelated minerals and trace minerals.
Spirulina is easily assimilated by the body. It contains potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, iron, copper and phosphorus. It also provides naturally occurring chlorophyll.
Spirulina is used for thousands of years. It is one of the few plant sources of Vitamin B12, making it an excellent nutritional supplement for vegetarian whose diets usually lack of Vitamin B12.
Because of its apparent ability to stimulate the immune system, spirulina may have antiviral and anticancer effects. Test tube and animal studies suggest that spirulina may also help protect against harmful allergic reactions.
Interestingly, spirulina has been used in Russia to treat the victims, especially children, of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. In these children, whose bone marrow had been damaged from radiation exposure, spirulina seemed to boost the immune system.
